Thanks to LEAF donors, early learners are thriving through hands-on discovery
Thanks to the generous donors of the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation, Ms. Thompkins’ early childhood classroom at Tamarron Elementary has been transformed into a vibrant hub of sensory exploration and playful learning.

With funding provided through a LEAF grant, Ms. Thompkins introduced sensory bins—interactive tools filled with tactile materials that spark curiosity, develop essential skills, and bring joy to young learners.
“Every child deserves the chance to learn through exploration,” said Ms. Thompkins. “Sensory bins offer that opportunity. They help students build oral language, practice conversation skills, and engage with their peers—all through hands-on play.”

These themed bins, filled with materials like rice, kinetic sand, water beads, and manipulatives, support the development of fine motor skills, creativity, and social-emotional growth. Whether they’re scooping, sorting, or storytelling, students are learning in ways that feel natural and exciting.
Ms. Thompkins has already seen a meaningful impact: “The students are more verbal, more engaged, and more confident in the classroom. It’s incredible to watch them grow.”
This project was made possible by the thoughtful contributions of LEAF’s dedicated donors. Their generosity continues to fuel innovative classroom experiences that help students thrive from the very beginning of their educational journey.
