Igniting Young Minds With the Spark of Wonder

As the title claims, this project was able to turn these Terrell Elementary students' learning spaces into worlds of wonder. Thanks to Mindy Pieritz's LEAF-funded grant, Igniting Young Minds With the Spark of Wonder, she was able to turn her classrooms into fun, themed spaces where stories came to life for the kindergarteners.

Interactive Learning

For kindergarten students, learning can be hard due to developing minds, attention spans, and an overall brand new learning ability! Mindy Pieritz knew exactly how to tackle this by not just facilitating what these students were learning, but how they were learning it, as well.

By utilizing an engaging read-aloud format to expose the children to new books and building hands-on activities, students were able to see, touch, and experience what they were learning, showcasing the importance of early-onset hands-on learning.

Along with meeting certain academic requirements, such as reading, writing, and math skills, these kindergarten students explored various real-world themes such as camping, different fruits like apples, topics like hibernation, and even special events such as holidays! By immersing themselves into whatever they were learning about in the moment through different activities that included props, decorations, and learning centers, their overall learning experiences were that more enhanced.

Strong Impact on Young Minds

As mentioned before, kindergarten students' minds are still developing, and unique learning experiences would help them retain knowledge much more effectively. With this project, learning was made meaningful and fun and gave these students important academic and social skills. They strengthened their math and reading skills, but also learned how to work with others while making their own decisions, giving them a glimpse into how they could take charge of their own learning. This fostered overall students excitement by creating a safe, positive learning environment, and benefitted the teachers, as well!

Overall, this LEAF-funded grant project was a success. Thanks to the LEAF funds and resources, teachers, students, and whole classrooms were forever transformed with practices that are sure to be carried on in the future.
