Board Member Spotlight "Meet Elgin Smith"

Meet Elgin Smith, one of LEAF’s dedicated board members, bringing enthusiasm, heart, and a passion for service to our mission. With a background in financial services and a current role as a Space and Facilities Officer, Elgin is all about getting things done and lifting up his community.

Outside of LEAF, Elgin is a self-described 57-year-old teenager at heart. He stays active by riding bikes, running marathons, and playing basketball and flag football with his kids and their friends.

Why Elgin Serves

“I serve on the LEAF Board because I enjoy giving and helping out in the community,” he says — and that energy is evident in everything he does. A natural connector, Elgin enjoys networking with people from all walks of life and thrives on building relationships that move good work forward. Elgin’s "why" is clear: “Public education is important because it’s the only way out for some of our students.” He hopes to see LEAF continue to grow by expanding grant opportunities and hosting more events that engage the district and spotlight the amazing work happening every day in Lamar CISD.

Favorite LEAF Moments

One of his favorite LEAF moments so far? The Surf’s Up Fundraiser and End-of-Year Bash. “It’s amazing to see teachers, young and seasoned, relax and enjoy a night of fun after a long year of giving their all to our kids. That joy is contagious.”

Looking Ahead

Elgin believes LEAF’s greatest impact is in its direct support to classrooms through grants that allow teachers to create experiences their students will never forget — both inside and outside of the classroom.

Fun Fact

He also co-founded the “Dads on Duty” initiative on the Maroon Track in 2004, creating a meaningful way to support students without being part of the PTO.

What’s something most people don’t know about the LEAF Board?

“Many of us are parents of students who are or were in LCISD,” he says. “We’re not just supporters — we’re part of the community we serve.”
