At Thomas Elementary, helping students feel safe and supported is a top priority, especially for the youngest learners. With the help of the LEAF-funded grant Reset, Relaxed, and Ready to Learn! Teacher Ms. Lily Thomas introduced a calming space specifically designed for Pre-K students. The goal was to nurture emotional regulation and equip students with the skills they need to manage their feelings and return to learning with focus and confidence.
Purpose & Impacts grant was designed with a clear intention:
This grant provided classrooms with calming tools and sensory-friendly resources, giving students a designated area to reset when overwhelmed. These calming corners support emotional development by encouraging independence and problem-solving in a peaceful environment.

Supporting Our Youngest Learners
Through this initiative, students began showing growth in their ability to self-soothe, work through emotional moments, and seek help when needed, laying a strong foundation for both academic and personal success.
Teachers saw firsthand how having these dedicated spaces allowed students to develop critical self-regulation skills, which led to a more positive and focused classroom atmosphere.
Thanks to LEAF, students are now better prepared to thrive—emotionally and academically—starting from their very first classroom experience.
