At the Lamar Educational Awards Foundation (LEAF), our mission is strengthened by passionate leaders who believe deeply in public education and the power of community. This month, we are proud to spotlight Marla Jurek, a dedicated LEAF Board Member whose heart for service and commitment to student success make a lasting impact.

Marla serves as the Business Development Representative at Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union Her ability to connect people and ideas has made a meaningful impact on the Foundation’s work and outreach efforts.
Why She Serves
For Marla, serving on the LEAF Board is about impact. “Being part of LEAF allows me to directly contribute to improving educational opportunities in our community,” she shares. “It’s about helping fund critical needs, supporting innovative programs, and advocating for student success.”
She also values the opportunity to give not just financially, but through her time and leadership. “Time is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give and it truly makes a difference in the lives of our students.”
The Strength She Brings..
Marla’s experience spans accounting, sales, marketing, and community outreach. She is especially passionate about financial literacy and relationship-building skills that help strengthen partnerships and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
A Program That Inspires
While she appreciates the impact of all LEAF initiatives, one event stands out, Surf’s Up. “It’s more than a fundraiser, it’s a celebration.
"Seeing teachers relax, connect, and feel supported by the community is incredibly meaningful. It reminds them they’re not alone and that their work is valued.”
LEAF's Impact
Marla believes LEAF’s greatest strength is the way it empowers educators. “Through grants and resources, LEAF gives teachers the ability to be creative and innovative in meeting student needs. That directly enhances engagement and learning, while also reinforcing to educators that their work matters.”
Beyond the classroom, she sees LEAF as a bridge, connecting schools and the broader community in ways that create lasting impact.
Why Public Education Matters
“Public education provides every child regardless of background, the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed,” Marla says. “It builds the foundation for strong communities and prepares students to become informed, responsible citizens.”
The Most Rewarding Part
For Marla, the most fulfilling aspect of her role is seeing impact firsthand. “Knowing that the decisions we make help bring ideas to life, support teachers, and create meaningful learning experiences, that’s incredibly rewarding.”
Beyond the Board
When she’s not working or volunteering, Marla enjoys crafting, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and relaxing by the pool in the sunshine.
Looking Ahead
Marla is excited about LEAF’s future and hopes to see continued growth in storytelling and impact. "I’d love for LEAF to continue showcasing how grant-funded ideas influence students year after year. These experiences leave lasting impressions and create opportunities students will never forget.”
